Summer School of Numerical Analysis of the History of the Sea and Oceans (ANHIMO 2023)

The Sorbonne University Alliance Ocean Institute and SCAI (Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence) are organizing ANHIMO 2023, a summer school dedicated to Numerical Analysis in Maritime History from June 26 to 30, 2023.
It is a question of bringing together young historians and researchers in artificial intelligence around the very concrete problems that arise for maritime historians.

How did people navigate the Four Channel in the 17th century? on which cards? How to use the reports and logbooks of the sailing navy? How to manage the avalanche of documents that overwhelm the contemporary maritimist? How to better read travelogues?
Are computer vision, HTR, OCR, massive excavation or data extraction techniques tools of the future for marine historians?
ANHIMO aims to give new perspectives to historians and computer scientists and to encourage powerful, original and fruitful interdisciplinary cooperation.
Goals :

  •          Learn the fundamental concepts of machine learning and their application to the humanities.
  •          Acquire practical skills using commonly used tools and libraries for textual and visual data analysis.
  •          Understand the different types of historical maritime charts and literary texts related to the history of the sea and learn the techniques to extract information from them.
  •          Learn some automatic handwriting analysis techniques for palaeography.
  •          Promote exchanges and collaboration between participants and stakeholders to develop projects on these topics.
